St. Edmond Church, Lafayette, LA

St Edmond Catholic Church is located at the corner of West Congress and Ambassador Caffery Parkway. The name of the Patron Saint of St Edmond Catholic Church is St. Edmund. Edmund was correctly spelled with a "u". However, the name was changed in honor of Mr. Edmond Orgeron, who was the owner of the land on which the present church was built.

The location of St. Edmond Church Parish is on a twelve acre parcel of land that had been owned by Our Lady of Fatima Church Parish since 1960. At that time, Our Lady of Fatima Parish, through its Auxiliary Bishop Robert Tracy, purchased ten acres of land from the Edmond A. Orgeron family. The Orgeron family graciously donated two acres of land to Fatima Church with the stipulation that once a church parish was established, the name of the parish would be St. Edmond in honor of Edmond A. Orgeron. When a parish was established in May 1974, the wish of the Orgeron family was honored and St. Edmond was the name of the new parish.

St. Edmond Church Parish was constituted on May 29, 1974 by the Most Reverend Gerald L. Frey, Bishop of Lafayette and placed in the care of the Washington Province of the Society of Mary, the Marist Fathers. The Reverend Charles Barrett, L.M., Marist Provincial, appointed Father Thomas C. Dowling, S.M. as Associate Pastor. St. Edmond Parish was formed from the surrounding church parishes of our Lady of Fatima, St. Jules, Holy Cross and Sts. Peter and Paul in Scott.
